Low tide is not a walking window

A generated Miyajima day that says “walk to the torii at low tide” has not told the family when the walk exists, or whether it exists at all that day.

The useful question is not when the tide is low. It is when the water is low enough to walk, and whether that time falls inside the hours a family can actually be on the island.

The signal: the island’s own tide page corrects the shortcut

The Miyajima Tourist Association publishes a tide page for the Great Torii of Itsukushima Shrine. Its Japanese table, opened on 6 October 2026, says you can walk out to the torii when the tide level is below 100 cm, and that the shrine looks as if it is floating when the level is above 250 cm. It calls “low tide means you can walk to the torii” misinformation, and says the same of “high tide means the shrine floats”. The table is published for Hiroshima Port. The association says Itsukushima may run slightly earlier.

So a low tide is a time and a height. If the height stays above 100 cm, there is no walk, however “low” the tide is called.

What the family loses when “low tide” stays one word

The failure is a wasted island afternoon, not a missed photograph. Here is what the association’s pages showed for October 2026:

Monday 5 October: the only low tide in the table is 111 cm at 10:44. That is above the 100 cm line, so there is no walk that day.

Tuesday 6 October: the walking window is 12:00 to 12:15. Fifteen minutes.

Tuesday 13 October: the only walking window is 3:00 to 6:15. The shrine opens at 6:30.

Tuesday 20 October: the page lists no walking window at all.

Wednesday 28 October: the lowest tide in the month’s table, −3 cm at 4:29. The walking window is 2:15 to 6:15, before the shrine opens.

Saturday 10 October: walking windows of 2:00 to 4:15 and 14:30 to 16:15, and floating windows of 6:45 to 11:45 and 19:00 to 23:00. This is a day a family can use.

The shrine’s own hours page lists 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until 14 October, and 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from 15 October to 30 November. The JR ferry from Miyajimaguchi takes about 10 minutes, and the JR ferry’s access page puts Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi at about 28 minutes. A plan that names the walk without the window can put a family on the sand at the wrong hour, or on the island on a day with no walk.

Use the window test before the day goes on the plan

Write these three lines next to the Miyajima day. If any line is blank, the day is still a suggestion.

Three lines the Miyajima day card owes you

The walking window for that date: the time the level is below 100 cm, copied from the tide page, and whether it falls inside shrine hours and after the train and ferry you will actually catch.

The floating window for that date: the time the level is above 250 cm. It is the other half of the view, and it is often the better use of a morning.

The swap day and the dry anchor: the other date in the trip with a usable window, and one anchor that does not depend on the water. The Miyajima Public Aquarium opens 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00, but it closes from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, so check the date before you lean on it.

The test is an inference from the association’s own rule, not a new rule. Tide figures are predictions. Check them again the night before.

Where Alfred fits

Alfred starts from a travelling profile. On web Lets Go, Holiday takes an origin, a destination, dates, a budget step and a day pace, then Plan my trip queues generation. Pace matters here. A Slow day fills only an afternoon activity slot, Moderate fills morning and afternoon, and Active adds an optional evening. If the walking window is at midday, pick the pace that leaves room for it, then write it in.

When the itinerary is ACTIVE, it can be viewed, edited and shared. An item’s title, notes and times can be edited by hand, so the window and the swap day can sit on the card itself. Hey Alfred can reschedule an item to a stated time, or swap two full days after you confirm. It will not move a day that has a flight. Once a flight and a hotel are both confirmed, the web toolbar shows Download The App in place of Hey Alfred, and the edit form is still there.

Alfred does not read the tide table while it writes the day. Book opens a partner checkout. It does not buy a ferry fare or pay the ¥100 Miyajima Visitor Tax, which Hatsukaichi City collects with the ferry fare. Hiroshima is not one of the destination guides in the signed-in app, so a guide page will not fill this gap.

Practical next step

Take the generated Miyajima day and fill in the three lines. If the walking window is outside shrine hours, or missing, move the island to a date that has one, or keep the floating window and drop the walk. Then put the revised day, with its swap date, into an editable plan the group can share.
