Day-by-day plan
Day 1 — Arrive in Christchurch and reset in the gardens
Keep the first day local. After check-in, choose Christchurch Botanic Gardens or a short central walk for 60–90 minutes, then dinner near the base. Do not add a distant attraction after arrival.

Day 2 — Christchurch spring culture and a flexible afternoon
Morning: pair one indoor stop such as Canterbury Museum or Tūranga with a compact central route. Lunch near Riverside Market; afternoon returns to the gardens or base for recovery rather than another long transfer.

Day 3 — Transfer to Kaikōura and protect the wildlife decision
Travel north after checking road conditions and the vehicle/transfer plan. Keep the afternoon light after arrival and use the waterfront only if energy allows. Do not schedule the marine activity on the arrival transfer.

Day 4 — Kaikōura wildlife anchor with shore fallback
Use one confirmed whale, dolphin, seal or coastal experience as the 2–4 hour anchor. Keep a shore-based coastal walk or local food stop for sea/weather disruption; do not imply a reservation from a link click.

Day 5 — Transfer to Nelson with one local stop
Protect the move west. Choose one nearby waterfront, market, garden or food stop only after checking travel time and road conditions; do not stack distant attractions onto the transfer.

Day 6 — Nelson morning and departure buffer
Choose a low-commitment local morning near the base, then preserve the onward departure. If returning to Christchurch, treat that transfer as a separate decision and do not assume same-day airport safety.
