Porto and the Douro are close enough to combine, but not interchangeable. Porto rewards a walkable city base; the valley needs a deliberate transfer, fewer timed commitments, and a plan for getting back after a scenic day.

Which valley base?

Pinhão is the stronger river-and-scenery choice. Peso da Régua can be more practical for transport. Pick one base rather than moving between both each day.

Rail or road?

Rail can make the transfer part of the experience. A private transfer may better suit luggage, car seats, and a fixed arrival window. Check the live timetable or road conditions.

What changes the plan?

Rain, heat, motion sickness, tiredness, boat availability, and a late arrival can all change the day. Keep Porto, the nearest base, or a shorter riverside plan as a valid fallback.
